my good friend is Caucasian and baby she is having in a few weeks in going to be African American and Cauasian, and she wanted a "black" name for her daughter and despite me begging not to name her this she is naming her Sha-la-queaceia (spelled like that) pronuce SA'- LA--QUEE_SEE- A not askibg for advice i just thought i should share that middle name is heather she wanted a "white" name for the midle name
Bad baby name?
i find it very hard to believe that she wants to name her daughter such a butchered name.
Reply:I am afraid your friend can't be influenced by you, it appears she has her mind made up.
However, you might want to educate her on the consequences of choosing an overly unique name, when it comes to education, and upward mobility. I've attached some articles.
Can you suggest she read the last few chapters of "Freakonomics" where there is extensive discussions on naming children.
Reply:Way to punish a kid trying to prove your point!!!!
Reply:poor baby, my kids will be mixed but i dont like "black" names like that. I want them to just have a good name.
Reply:do parents hate their kids or something? what is it with these god awful names? they sound so ignorant and uneducated. people that suck that badly should not be allowed to pro-create.
Reply:Someone needs to explain to her that names aren't black or white.....
Names originate in LANGUAGES
ie: Greek, Hebrew, Swahili, Hindu.
There are NO BLACK OR WHITE NAMES.
poor kid.....what language is that supposed to be?
Reply:I hope so too. What does the baby's dad think of it?
Reply:I don't get the question. BUT if the baby decides she doesn't like the name at school, she an always be called Heather!
Reply:i think that name is to much for people to say and certainly doesnt go with heather, maybe suggest ehr some more 'black' names here are a few i like
Jenndaya
Kanisha
Keandra
Keisha
Kenya
Kohanna
Lakesha
Tnisha
Reply:lol.
You are a good friend to try and talk your friend out of a name like that!
Can I suggest that you let her read all the reactions on this page and let her see for herself what the poor child will go through?
:o) Good luck
Reply:Making up a name and calling it African is kind of insulting, don't you think? There are many really beautiful African names for girls.
Have her look in the following for names:
Reply:I have three mixed daughters...
Jeslyn (Jez-lyn) Alana
Jayla Corell (Sor-ell)
Jistori (Ji-Story) Terra
But its not because there black and white they all have special meanings to them and reasons why I pick their names. My name is Jessica and thats how I started this whole J name thing my grandpa's name was Jay, Terra is after my brother and father in laws they are Terri's.. Corell is after her father Cordell.
Tell her to pick a meaning full name for her baby and something that will bring the beauty out of the child. I know right now she likes it but when your pregnant and hormonal you wouldn't belive of the things we think of.. She will probably change her mind.
Reply:Hmm, wow. I also, when that time comes will have black/white babies as well, but we didnt chose names like that....lol. if she wants a "black" name, why not chose an African name, that has a good meaning behind it, rather than some extremely ghetto sounding name ( i didnt mean that offensively)
but yeah... wow.
suggest looking at African names, some are very pretty.
Reply:wow tell her she may not be taken seriously in the grown up world try to tell her things like that to change her mind and suggest this name
davinae
i think its amazing.
Reply:Ask her if she can compromise a little, maybe name the baby Shayla and have Queasia as the middle name 9I really don't like Heather). That way the child will learn how to spell her name before she enters the sixth grade.
Reply:hmm......i like it
Reply:That's sad. I feel sorry for the baby....I really do. By the way ask her what's a "black" name?
Reply:I don't really see how she gets that pronounciation out of that spelling.
I would pronounce it Sha-La-Que-A-See-Ah.
Regardless that is quite the name....I feel bad for the little girl. All through her life she will have to correct people.
But, I guess you can't do anything. Your friend will name her whatever she wants.
Good luck!
Reply:There is no such thing as a bad name as long as you like the name and the child will not grow up being teased about it. My friend named her baby Dillion Cocaine
Reply:OH MY!!!!!!
Reply:WOW thats very weird and sure not a name I would want to have. I garentee when she gets older she will go by her middle name.
Reply:I like Shawtelle
I do not think it's black or white name
Tell her no, it's bad
Give her Black names that you like
Reply:that is a bit over the top does she think she has something to prove? that is a heck of a name poor kid imagine her trying to spell that in kindergarten. why doesn't she pick a shorter name. i get that she wants to honor the fathers background but she could pick something a bit less over the top. try telling her to imagine a 5 year old trying to spell that.
Reply:It is hard for a grown person who has two haritages to Sort out their name when they get older. If she is going to be raised in a white setting then name her a anglo name something unusual if she want. So the child can identify with the name. My niece name her biracial child Jorden.
If your friend is going to be raised with the fathers family involved then name her a Black name.
My daughter had a problem with her name all through school and her name came from another culture other than the ethnic area we lived in and the school she attended.
If that chlds mother is white and her father "black." A non name made up out of the air is hard for a child to live up to.
My best friend combined two names that of the baby's father and that of her own and came up with the name Al for Albert and Rita for her name. Alrita. The child being bi-racial.
A hundred years from now will the name be an issue? Certainly not.
Reply:Hopefully she'll come around by November.
What about these suggestions:
Ciara / Ciera / Cierra
Destiny / Destinee
Trinity / Trinitee
Jaiden / Jaden / Jayden
Brianna
Jessica
Jordan
Shoncy
Shondra
Kiara
Kiana
Good luck! I hope she decides against naming her child that awful name.
Reply:Yuck.. wheres that baby gonna find a job. That name is so through. Sorry but you asked. Tell ya friend to stick to the basics like Morgan, Madison and Bree
Reply:Ahhhhh, poor baby! Have you tried telling her that it will be hard for the baby to learn how to spell her name when the time comes. Perhaps she can stick with just SHAY or SHAYLA. I had a friend in highschool named CHRISMA. Another girl was named PRECIOUS GEM and had a baby in the 9th gr. whom she named AFRICIA. My best friend of 13 yrs. wanted to name her lil' girl O'SHEONA BREEZY! LMAO No kidding! The names ladies are using these days makes you wonder if they need mental help or if their pregnacy is causing swelling of the brain. P.S. I talked my friend into naming her daughter BRITANY MICHELLE. She'll thank me later. lol Good Luck!
Reply:thats a little over board... she has to think about how others will react when the baby is older.
