Baby name problem!?

Hey! I have decided to name my daughter a Hebrew name, Hedya. I know it is really kind of ackward sounding to English people. The reason I have chosen it is it's beautiful meaning, "Echo of God". Meanings are much more important to me than the actual name but of course I have sympathy for my baby girl. The name has a nickname "Dya" pronounced "Die ah". Is this normal/pretty enough for her to go by if she choses? Please don't just trash the name Hedya, I personally think it's lovely but I know that the world can be cruel.

Baby name problem!?
If I were you I would let the name be a surprise until the baby is actually born. I did that with my son. People are much less harsh on a name when it is the baby's actual name. When you are pregnant, people tell you all their reasons why THEY don't like it. But when you present little baby Hedya to them they won't say anything. It is your child after all.
Reply:Oh my gosh that is abesolutely beautiful!

She might want to go by Hedya

but since in middle school everythin can be a crisis, and kids can be mean, Dya coluld be kind of a good nickname, but i think for a nickname she might want an american nickname, if this is the case i think a good nickname would be Heidi.

congratulations! and do not let anyone tll you that Hedya isnt a beautiful name because i is one of the most beautiful names i have ever heard. i hope you like the nickname i though of.

also what are you going tho make her middle name? if you need any help with that let me know!

again congrats i hope she is happy and healthy!
Reply:english speakers invariably pronounce dya,as deea, its just how the language is.if u spell it "hediah",it will retain its meaning, but will be perceived, properly as "he die ah."think of mariah carey.if she spelled it maria or marya, people would pronounce it wrong.but "iah" gives the correct sound,as hediah would.btw,a lovely name !!!!go 4 it !people will call her heddy for short tho,and in hi school, boys will ask her to give head-unless the world improves by then!
Reply:I LOVE baby name meanings!!!!! They 're so special %26amp; unique! Hedya is a bit of a tough one though....I think that because it is a unique name kids might make fun of her....but, if I loved a name that much I would raise my daughter to be proud of it. If you go with it, make it a big deal to her that she is special. Tell her about how much you loved it and how the beautiful meaning should give her joy. I adimre you for straying from the "popular" and "In-the-minute" names, that will ultamately make her dated and one of many.

If you still can't decide, Ester is a beautiful Jewish name meaning "Star". It also has a good story ( She was the light and star for her people). Either way, It is ultimately your choice and if it means a lot to you it will mean a lot to her;)

p.s. you sound like a very thoughtful mother, most wouldn't think about teasing.
Reply:I like unusual names that have a great meaning and this one does..i really like the nickname for that..very pretty. But have you thought of a middle name? i think it should be something jus as meaningful..or maybe like Joy or Love. but after all it dont matter shes yours and will love you no matter her name.
Reply:Is it pronounced hey-die-ya?

If so, I think it's really nice. I've never heard if before, and I did mispronounce it until I read about the nickname, so she'll probably have to pronounce it for every person she meets, but it's really pretty, and the nickname is great!
Reply:I love Hebrew names too like Hadassah, and Ruhama. I don't see anything wrong with naming your daughter that. And the nn is cute too. Just because it's not mainstream American, doesn't mean you should go with the flow,. Hedya is unusual and the meaning is great!
Reply:I think the meaning is absolutely gorgeous unfortunately few will know that is behind the name. The name itself is what the child will live with. The nickname is not a child friendly name at all.........lots of room for jokes and taunting. I would find something a little softer that still holds meaning.
Reply:let me tell u the truth i don't love that name ! and a lot doesn't soo maybe ure daughter won't like it !! choose soemthing people like it a lot so ure dauther will !! people will laugh at her name ! maybe the meaning of this name is good but who cares !! no offence
Reply:I like Hedya. But I think, for her sake, it should be her middle name. And I agree with what some people said before me, that you should wait until she is born, because then you will really know her and at that moment you will know what is right.

Hope I helped! :)
Reply:Name her whatever you want to. She's YOUR baby, screw the haters, I think it's beautiful and it's got meaning behind it.
Reply:if your worried about people and what they will think make it her middle name. personally i think middle names have more meaning than your first name
Reply:It makes me think of that Greek mythical beast Hydra.
Reply:is it pronounced heh die ah if so i like it
Reply:I would make that her middle name if i were you
